About the Chef

Loyiso Mbambo, widely known as “Roots,” is a celebrated South African chef, restaurateur, and entrepreneur rooted in the vibrant community of Kayamandi, Stellenbosch. Renowned for bringing traditional Xhosa cuisine to life with a modern, creative twist, he has become a defining culinary voice in the region. 

Raised on the flavours of African home cooking, Loyiso learned the fundamentals of traditional cuisine from his aunt before pursuing formal training in restaurant and kitchen management, including an internship with Stellenbosch Tourism. His deep passion for food and culture soon evolved into a mission: to showcase authentic township cuisine on a world-class stage. 

Loyiso’s journey includes founding and leading several successful ventures: 

• Roots Restaurant — his original culinary home, later rebranded as Amazinki 

• Amazink Eatery — co-owner and chef, serving high-quality, authentic South African dishes 

• Empopeni — co-owner, continuing to champion traditional Xhosa food 

• Mzizi-Roots — co-founder of a private transport and tour company offering chauffeur services, airport transfers, and guided tours 

• Roots Korro — his latest lifestyle venture, bringing township cuisine and tourism together in a vibrant, modern format

He has collaborated with industry leaders, including award-winning chef Bertus Basson, hosting special culinary events that bridge cultures and celebrate local flavours. Beyond the kitchen, Loyiso is also a qualified tour guide, sharing the stories, heritage, and energy of Kayamandi with visitors from around the world. 

Dedicated to community upliftment, Loyiso continues to use food, hospitality, and tourism to tell the story of Kayamandi. His work promotes a vision of the township as a modern, thriving destination full of opportunity — a place where culture, cuisine, and creativity meet.
